Fearless Film Heroines

On March 23, 2012, the Girl on Fire will take the cinema on by storm in the premiere of The Hunger Games (yes, we’ve already pre-ordered our tickets). And though Katniss Everdeen is one of the best heroines ever to fire a bow and arrow, we can’t forget the seemingly invincible gals who have rocked Hollywood this past decade.

So, raise your wands and grab those boxing gloves, because we’ve rounded up 10 of the best leading ladies (and the women who played them) we’ve seen on the big screen over the past ten years. Get ready to kick some major ass!

Katniss Everdeen

It’s impossible not to have caught Jennifer Lawrence covering a fashion glossy or starring in numerous trailers for one of the most anticipated films of 2012. As Katniss Everdeen—loving sister, huntress, and Girl on Fire—she is unstoppable. May the odds be ever in your favor.

Lisbeth Salander

To play the role of kickass crime fighter Lisbeth Salander, the sweet and reserved Rooney Mara underwent the transformation of a lifetime. The result: A haunting, tormented heroine who inspires us to stand up and fight the terrible injustices committed against women.

Hermione Granger

We’ve been Emma Watson fans since Hermione first waved her wand in 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone. But we have to admit: we got a little teary eyed as we watched the whip-smart witch work her magic one more time in Deathly Hallows.

2009: Claireece Precious Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), Precious

Precious

Gabourey Sidibe broke our hearts as the sexually and physically abused, pregnant, and morbidly obese Claireece Precious Jones. Her courage in the face of traumatic events equally shocked and awed us.

2008: Latika (Freida Pinto), Slumdog Millionaire

Latika

In the slums of Mumbai, Freida Pinto’s Latika sacrifices her own freedom for Jamal (Dev Patel), the poverty stricken orphan she loves. Though she’s not the typical arrow-shooting tomboy we usually think of when we think of kickass heroines, it took an extreme amount of bravery to give herself up to Salim in order to save her true love’s life.

More fabulous, fearless leading ladies, including Ellen Page’s Juno and Uma Thurman’s Beatrix Kiddo (a.k.a. The Bride), up next!
